Janelle Hardy
I am an artist born and raised in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon. I have always worked creatively in a variety of different fields, including photography, dance, painting and writing.
I feel most alive and present when observing the everyday events that happen all around me. The images I presents are a reflection of the everyday intimacy we are surrounded by, the beauty and sublime expressions of ordinary everyday people, events and things. A child chasing shadows reflected from little pieces of mirrors across the wall, crawling under and around the feet of adults at a dance, the way that shadows play across the wall, the way people move and present themselves in the world through an infinite array of gestures, all of these are nourishment and fodder for my creative expression.
I have exhibited my photography and painting at Arts Underground, The Yukon Gallery and The Chocolate Claim, performed with the Yukon Dance Ensemble at the Yukon Arts Centre and presented dance choreography in Toronto at fFIDA and in Whitehorse at Brave New Works at the Longest Night Event at the Yukon Arts Centre. I have also written for The Dance Current Magazine, Artsnet Magazine, What’s Up Yukon Magazine and Yukon North of Ordinary Magazine.
I find that everything I have pursued and been through are resources for creating. My BA in Anthropology, MA in Dance, and Diploma in Hellerwork Structural Integration, along with my experiences traveling and living across Canada, Japan, Russia, Cuba, Barbados and Peru all inform and resource my art and ideas.
