Tony Clennett
Tony Clennett was born in 1959 and has lived in the Yukon since 1960. He currently lives in Whitehorse and works at the print shop at Yukon College and is creating his art out of his home studio.
He studied art in Vancouver, B.C., receiving his Diploma of Fine Arts in 1987, from Emily Carr College of Art and Design as well as his Diploma Of Fine Arts from Langara College in 1984.
Clennett feels his art is an exploration of the visual and intellectual world he experiences. He believes that art exists only because it is a personal experience, and that each person interprets and appreciates each piece of work in his or her own way.
The art that Tony does is quite broad, from Sculpting to Pottery and then into Graphics, Drawing, Painting and Set designs he creates for local recording groups. A large colored plexiglass mobile called ‘Touchdown’, hangs in the Whitehorse International Airport. Tony’s latest big project was a life size ceramic chess set that was installed in the Chess Show at the Yukon Arts Center Gallery.
His major at Emily Carr was in Three Dimensional Studies, which also took him into the fields of metal casting and mold making, welding and woodworking.
Clennett lives in the Yukon because of the land and the people, he says, “we live with the most colorful backdrop to create art in”.
